This is the kind of distressing you do with inks and paints and sandpaper.

Where you can take your aggressions out on poor unsuspecting cardstock and canvas.

Ranger has a line of Distress inks that are great to get that old and tattered look.
They also carry Distress Embossing Powders.

But there are a lot of fun techniques to try.
